I Hate How Much the BJ’s Mural In West Asheville Looks Like Marjorie Taylor Greene

Marjorie Taylor Greene is making headlines again (what, did you think she might actually be legislating?), but the difference this time is that she’s getting some praise from the left and mainstream media for bucking against magaland and pushing for the release of the Epstein files (in a sea of legacy publications jonesing to both-sides Taylor Greene for whatever reason, I was happy to see The Cut publish a piece titled Marjorie Taylor Greene and Nancy Mace Don’t Deserve Credit for This).

Though I’ve been doing my best to avoid the hellscape that is our current newscycle, I thought about Taylor Greene recently, when a school shooting occurred at a Catholic school mass on August 27 (which, speaking of newscycles, came and went like it was just another batch of bad weather, even though its implications are long lingering). I think of Taylor Greene every time there’s another school shooting, remembering one of the things that essentially secured her current political ubiquity: Taylor Greene heckling and harassing a then-18-year-old David Hogg, a Parkland shooting survivor. She’s genuinely a despicable piece of shit.

Despite doing my best to ignore the news’ outrage cycle, I unfortunately think about Taylor Greene (and, by the way, why the extra “e”?) quite frequently, because I see a portrait that resembles her quite often.
One of my favorite places to get some writing done is the front porch of Battlecat Coffee Bar in West Asheville. Battlecat has my favorite frozen chai in all of Asheville, and hanging out there is a big inspiration for my Overheard on Haywood Road series (which I need to resurrect). Battlecat is directly across from a gas station/convenience store called BJ’s, which features a mural—sorry, street art (#streetart?)—on the side with a blonde woman that I think looks just like Marjorie Taylor Greene. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
