This is admittedly going to be a bit of a throwaway blog, just so I could share the amazing photos I got during the first Black Balsam Sunrise hike I completed this year, back on the 4th of July.
Why I love a Black Balsam sunrise hike—and why it makes my list of The Best Way to Spend an Asheville Summer Sunday—is that if you get up there in time to watch the some come up (typically by 6:15ish on a summer Sunday—earlier if you want to witness the sky change from dark to light) you can still hike the entirety of the Black Balsam/Tennent Mountain loop and still be back in town by 9 or 10, with essentially an entire day ahead of you, that you can then embark on knowing that you already completed a 5-mile sunrise hike. Honestly, pair this with any of my best ways to spend an Asheville summer Sunday ideas for what can only amount to be a glorious day.
